Committees and Departments
The Village Hall is situated in the
heart of the business district across from the harbor, acting as
goodwill ambassador to all who pass through her doors. Public meetings
take place at the Village Hall monthly, allowing residents to have
direct input on all issues facing government. Residents are encouraged
to participate in the meetings, as well as volunteer to serve on
Village committees and boards. These include:
Committees
Public Safety Advisory Board
- (3 year term) The Public Safety Advisory Board studies and reviews
the operation and administration of the village ordinances which
involve public safety and welfare. They advise the Board of Trustees
on any modifications or improvements which would foster improved
public safety and quality of life in the village.
The Planning Board - (5-year
term) The Planning Board reviews all the intial applications for
any kind of building permits, whether it be for a simple deck application
or for a multi-dwelling, new construction project. The Planning
Board gives advise and guidance to applicants and will ultimately
issue permits to those projects that meet current codes.

The Zoning Board of Appeals
- (5-year term) The Zoning Board of Appeals listens to cases that
have been referred to them by the planning board, where a relief
from a code requirement or a variance is needed in order to grant
a building permit, or where an interpretation of code is necessary
to grant a "change of use." The ZBA meets on an "as
needed" basis, usually convening once a month. Residents are
encouraged to participate in the hearings, as input from residents
is given consideration when deciding an important issue.

Conservation Advisory Council
- (3 year term). The Conservation Advisory Council advises the Board
of Trustees on matters affecting the preservation, development,
and use of natural and man-made features within the Village so as
to enhance the long-range value of the environment to the people
of the Village; conducts studies and inventories of the natural
and man-made environment of the Village; and maintains an inventory
of open space within the Village for preservation and/or use.
Port Jefferson Country Club Commission
- (3-year term) This Commission works directly with the Country
Club Faculty and administration to help manage the recreational
facilities of the club, and oversee the maintenance of the grounds
and club house. The commission may also propose special outings
and events to the Board of Trustees, such as the annual Halloween
Party, which features a haunted hay ride for children on the golf
course.
The Parks Commission - (5-year
term) The Parks Commission is responsible for the consideration
and enactment of local laws for the care, management and protection
of the parks, beaches and recreational facilities of the village.
The Commission also recommends recreational and cultural activities
to the Board of Trustees, and oversees the construction of any new
parks or playgrounds which may result. Some of the special events
which the Parks Department sponsors annually are the Arts and Antiques
Fair, The Concert Series on the harbor and the Adult Recreation
Program, which features men's and women's softball, co-ed volleyball,
golf and aerobics. Port village also has an active senior citizen
program which sponsors bus trips, luncheons and holiday parties.
Economic Development Council
- The newest of the village commissions, Economic Development, is
primarily responsible for creating programs which will enhance the
downtown business district while promoting quality of life for all
residents. Grants are applied for under economic development, including
the Historic Facade Restoration grant recently awarded by the New
York State Council of the Arts. The publication you are reading
is a direct result of an economic development effort to promote
and encourage new business and a new resident base to join the village's
spirit of community and involvement.
Architectural Review Committee
- Members of the Architectural Review Board are at work. Village
Trustees have adopted the guidelines of the ARC and committee members
