The Setauket Yacht Club, the Village of Port Jefferson, Mather Hospital, the Port Jefferson Conservancy and the Lustgarten Foundation, created this community event last year to raise money in their fight against pancreatic cancer. The uniqueness of this first official event to take place in our harbor appealed to the Mayor. Village employees compete against the staff and doctors of Mather Hospital in a race from the harbor to the sound and back on Saturday, September 6th, 2014.
This annual fundraiser is a friendly, yet competitive, sailboat race officiated by the Setauket Yacht Club. Club members graciously volunteer to be captains and first mates donating their boats and expertise. The volunteer sailors from Village and Mather Hospital help crew boats that are divided into two fleets.
After the race, the Conservancy hosts a reception at Village Center in honor of the two teams, volunteers and spectators who exchange racing stories while enjoying refreshments and a hot meal.
Last year, the Village squeaked out a victory over Mather by a slim four points in the raging winds of a high seas battle. Don’t miss this year’s Regatta, scheduled for September 6th for what is sure to be a strong challenge from Mather to take home the coveted cup.
